The regional bioeconomy testbeds are important tools in driving and demonstrating forest-based innovation. The testbeds are not merely physical workshops where innovative ideas can develop, but these are also innovation hubs surrounded by Paper Province’s innovation structure, which includes companies to cooperate with, relevant competencies as well as relevant networks and even funding. In summary, the testbeds are mini arenas for collaboration.
Fossil-Free Laminate – FFLAM
The unique test bed Fossil-free Laminate, FFLAM, is being developed by around 20 stakeholders. The intention is to produce fossil-free laminates that can replace or reduce the use of fossil-based packaging materials.
The project's financiers are Sweden's innovation authority Vinnova, together with about twenty project participants. This includes researchers, board manufacturers, bioplastic manufacturers, printing companies and brand owners. RISE Research Institutes of Sweden in Stockholm, UMV Coating Systems in Säffle and Brobygrafiska Utbildning in Sunne are participating in the project with their test facilities.
The initiative will help reduce the use of fossil-based packaging materials, reduce microplastic emissions and increase the use of fiber-based materials. The three-year project involves designing and realizing the test operations, which will make the companies' steps from idea to commercial product much easier. Various players can use the test facilities to develop and test their innovations, so that in the future they can launch them in the form of environmentally friendly food packaging.
